Everywhere you look. Auto mags, Consumer Reports, and even on TV. The American Manufactures don't get the respect they deserve. Year after year mags like Consumer Rports keep saying the American Manufacturers are closing the quality gap. Never quite being considered equal to the Japaneese. IMO thats just not the case anymore. Just last week the Today show had a guy on from Consumer reports talking about fuel effecient cars and trucks. He stated that you can get a small car that gets 35MPG's like a Honda Fit or Civic. A midsize like a Nissan Altima that gets around 23 MPG and a small SUV like he Toyota Rav4 that gets around 22 MPG. It made it sound like the only way to get good mileage is with a Japaneese model. The first thing that came to my mind was there are American cars in each of those classes that get gas mileage close to or even better than the cars they showed. The Cobalt, Fusion, Malibu, and Escape came to mind, but there was no mention of any American cars. I also think that in other countries there is more loyality to Domestic models, and I don't think the automotive press is as biased toward Japaneese cars. I know several people who drove several cars and actually liked the American model they drove better that the Import, but ended up buying the import because Consumer Reports or Motor Trend said it was better. I think it's more of a perception gap that actual quality gap. I don't know how to change that.
