Re: GM to reject foreign manufacturers, build own batteries

I view this as a very positive decision. Hopefully General Motors will not pull an "IBM" on their electric automobile technology. IBM outsourced the processor integrated chip to Intel and the operating software to MicroSoft and lost control of the personal computer market. This was one of the biggest strategic business blunders in modern history.

Re: GM to reject foreign manufacturers, build own batteries

Freakin' "A" finally someone said it, what is the dif between imported oil and imported cars/batteries? Nothing as far as I can see! It is time for the people of America to put up or shut up. The Volt Tech maybe expensive in the beginning, however I for one have the money and I am going to buy one for my wife! Bring it on GM!

Speaking of loans...where is all of this magical money coming from:

Fed Takes Control of AIG With $85 Billion Bailout ...

10 Billion per month wars overseas, huge multi billion dollar bailouts, the hundreds of billions just keep rolling in from somewhere.... Quite disturbing.
MING, I was thinking some of those well healed movie stars from the gloriuos state of CA. could pony up a bit of money. Don't they make billions off of B.S. movies and provide millions to " " candiadates. It just seems BABS was able to shake down Hollywood's elite for 9 million last night.

As for the 10 billion dollar figure? Sounds like a Democratic talking point. Since I am a LTC in the U.S. Army, me thinks that is a cheap price to pay not to have cities become a smoking radioactive pile of rubble!

I sent this to Ron earlier, hoping it might get it's own headline or something. It's a Ford/MIT joint study, and could revolutionize all battery technology: http://www.sciencentral.com/articles...e_id=218392803

Cliff Notes: Capacitor based batteries.... Nanotubes inside capacitors to increase their internal surface area, making them hold much more charge than a standard capacitor; recharges in seconds instead of hours, and doesn't wear out over time like a chemical comp. battery...... check it out, GM should get in on this with Ford and MIT......

Could This Be The Reason For The Delay In The Introduction Of The Volt? Gm Not Only Has To Build The Car, It Also Has To Create Teh Capacity An Technology To Build The Batteries On A Scale The World Has Never Seen.

Re: GM to reject foreign manufacturers, build own batteries

My guess is that they are going to license a core battery technology from someone else and set up thier own manufacturing operation. The job posting seemed like more of a manufacturing engineering position than a pure product development position.

In any case, it's a step in the right direction.

My thoughts exactly.

Doesn't GM have the batteries already? All they need to do is copy paste!

Sure, and in no time GM will be producing those batteries in a maquiladora factory in Mexico or in China or India.
