GM plans to build low-priced small vehicle
By John Reed in London Sunday Mar 4 2007 18:10

General Motors has become the latest carmaker to announce plans for a low-priced vehicle, to be built and sold in emerging markets such as India, China and Russia.

The US carmaker plans to build a small model, which will sell for about $7,000 to $8,000, and a "lower-intermediate" model – similar to Renault's cheap Logan mid-sized car – which will sell for about $9,000.

"The demographics of the world is changing," Nick Reilly, president of GM Asia Pacific, told the Financial Times in an interview. "There's a huge number of people just getting to the point of getting off two wheels and on to four wheels."

Don't worry it's not coming here, no need to discredit any names.

I agree with that --- just come up with a name that can be said easily in the markets it is intended for --- hire a marketing company to come up with the name, but Dear Lord, don't call it anything heritage inspired.

As for the article, it seems we're not getting one, but TWO low-cost products now? It will be good to have something that can go toe-to-toe with the Logan.

I got an idea.
How about GM goes and buys up all the used Cavaliers that are out there, recondition them, and sell them instead? They could sell late-model versions for around $5,000.

Maybe one of THESE is what GM Brazil is developing, instead of the minicompact Opel hatch that's on one of the other threads, which I'm informed is a joint GM-Suzuki project.

Doesn't the GMDAT built Spark sell for about the same price?

Why do we always hear about this plan and that plan with GM? How about keeping the plans secret, then showing us the end results.
