GM orders 100,000 Hitachi Lithium-Ion Batteries BAS+ comming soon

Hitachi Ltd (6501.T), Japan's biggest industrial electronics group, plans to boost production capacity for lithium-ion batteries for hybrid cars at an estimated cost of 20-30 billion yen, targeting a 70-fold increase by 2015, the Nikkei business daily said.

Capacity will initially be raised more than 600 percent by next autumn, the paper said it learnt on Wednesday.

Hitachi has already received orders for lithium-ion batteries for 100,000 hybrid autos that General Motors (GMGMQ.PK) plans to sell from next year, Nikkei said.

I am confused...I thought the Volt was the only GM car to use these batteries...but this refers to "hybrids", which I thought the Volt was not considered to be. Are batteries being incorporated into the BAS hybrids somehow?

No, no, no, no, no. The VOLT batteries are built by LG Chem of Korea. They are building a plant for the VOLT batteries right now. These batteries are for GM BAS+ mild-hybrid.

These Lithium-Ion cells are for BAS+. The Volts cells are coming from LG Chem.

No, VOLT batteries are from LG Chem (As I stated.) BAS+ are getting the Lithium-ION from Hitachi. Current BAS uses Nickel Metal-Hydrate.

Correct. And the Lithium-Ion batteries for the plug in 2-mode were supposed to come from A123 systems (if this is still going to happen).

Thanks, I had no idea at all that batteries were used with the BAS hybrids.

Thanks. Maybe you can explain something I've yet to get my mind around...how does regenerative braking work? I just don't see how mechanical/heat energy from brakes can be converted to electricity.

Let's hope the killing of the Malibu hybrid and this announcement signals an impending announcement of BAS+ vehicles. I still think a BAS+ Cruze could be a big winner.

John, regenerative braking uses the electric motors as alternators to charge the batteries. The friction from having nothing to power the alternator except momentum (The engine is off) slows the car down. Traditional friction brakes bring the car to a complete stop after that.

Can BAS+ be paired with the hybrid transmissions used in the full size trucks?

Those are truck transmissions. The Two-Mode cooperation is working on a scaled down 2-mode for cars if I remember hearing from DuSpinnst correctly.
