GM offers discounts to storm victims

By Shawn Langlois, CBS.MarketWatch.com

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) -- A day after announcing a zero-percent financing revival, General Motors said Wednesday that it will give bonus cash to buyers whose vehicles were damaged by the series of storms that ravaged the Southeast.

The world's largest automaker is offering a $750 cash allowance toward the purchase or lease of most 2004 and 2005 GM vehicles for residents of Florida and Alabama who felt the brunt of tropical storm Bonnie and hurricanes Charley, Frances and Ivan.

In addition, if customers finance the purchase through the company's GMAC financing arm, the first payment won't be due until January 2005.

"We want to do what we can to help those who have been affected by the severe weather in our region," said Dave Borchelt, regional general manager of GM's (GM: news, chart, profile) Southeast region.

GM always steps up to the plate in these situations. Remember 9/11? I believe they sent hybrid trucks down for Hurricane Charley, too. Then, of course, there was the Oprah extravaganza.

Creating goodwill is a valuable business tool that large companies usually have trouble with. GM seems to do great
