Nice. the hottest place in the U.S. I thought they were moving that operation down to the middle of nowhere Mexico.

That is what is nice about Yuma. All the heat and desolation of Mexico, but without all the outsourcing.

No doubt, but thought GM was basically looking for the Land of the Lost to relocate. I didn't think Yuma was remote enough.

Re: GM Moving Desert Proving Grounds Operation to Yuma

Compared to Mesa and the growth going around... they may have a little more privacy out in Yuma...

Regardless... I just hope they continue to come out with nice vehicles that can stand up to the heat (of Arizona and abroad!)...

GO GM!!!

Hehe, Yuma is pretty remote for Arizona... it may not be the smallest town here, but it is pretty low populated.

good choice GM

I thought Mesa had already been closed down and the land sold. No?

GM sold it and is leasing it back from the new owner until a new site is ready. Seems like they could have got the new site ready and THEN sold it, but hey, it's GM.

Good to see that it is going to remain in the US and Arizona. It was just a matter of time before they had to get out of Mesa. The growth out there has been crazy over the last few years. I'd hate to have to move to Yuma, though.

I thought they were getting rid of desert test grounds completely, in-place of simulated desert conditions in MI. Anyway, I agree with ZvetteGuy, as they continue the product renaissance and increase their competitiveness, I don't care!

Re: GM Moving Desert Proving Grounds Operation to Yuma

I worked there for a bunch of years. The Mexico thing involved a land dispute in mexico so the work was only margionally shifted. The DPG continued to operate on a reduced level until the land was sold last year. One of the draw backs of Mesa was when they closed williams AFB was the DPG lost its restricted airspace protection which the AFB provided. Flyovers by photographers became quite common after that. I have to assume the new property provides some restricted airspace protection visa vi the Army. I'm not positive about that but I would expect such.

As along as the lease is reasonable GM did the smart thing, it would be worse having the new site completed and not be able to sell the old one. Happens often in Real Estate transactions.

They sold it early... for below market value... It was sold simply to help the bottom line on the annual report last year.

See, that's one of the reasons Japanese companies are ahead of American ones-they don't (in general) do things to make this year's numbers look good when doing them later is better, and more profitable, overall.

Are you nuts? They got almost as much per acre as the state did in its big auction of PRIME land in the best part of town. They sold at Phoenix's peak, and made a killing.
