GM Investing $190 Million in Kan. Plant

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) -- A $190 million upgrade will help General Motors Corp.'s plant in Fairfax continue to perform strongly in a rough time for the U.S. auto industry, a union official said.
"This is something we expected to get, but it's good that it finally happened," said John Melton, bargaining chairman of United Auto Workers Local 31. "It could add 100-some new jobs, but that won't be for a couple of years."

Melton said Thursday the automaker is buying new equipment to build a redesigned version of the Chevrolet Malibu.

So Fairfax is getting another car? Any speculation on what it might be?

The upgrades are for the new Malibu, not "another" car.

OH. I must have read too deep into the article because I knew the NextGen Malibu was going to be built there.

No, you're right. Fairfax will get an Epsilon II based LaCrosse anywhere from '10 to '12.

Watch the Chinese version of the new Lacrosse outshine the one we would get, just like how it is now. This is just sad. lol

I don't think so..I think it's just to make the necessary changes for the new version. But hey, let's hope it's a rock star right out of the gate!

Let's hope the Malibu's sales grow on the retail side. I'd be fine with stagnant overall sales if it meant the mix shifted away from [image- and profit-eroding] fleet sales. Besides, more retail sales might suggest that the American consumer is ready to forgive GM for decades of crap product. That would give me hope, indeed.

I hope the 'Bu lives up to its early hype.

The Current La Crosse needs to be put out of its misery.

Hopefully GM teaches guys at Fairfax how to install Navigation units intergrated into the console

IMHO the NA LaCrosse looks better than the China Lacrosse exterior wise. Now the interior of the Chinese Lacrosse is more than likely better than ours though.
