GM drama: We almost lost Rick

GM drama: We almost lost Rick
Wagoner sought GM board backing -- and got it

DETROIT -- When General Motors' board of directors issued an April 3 press release noting its support for CEO Rick Wagoner, the bland statement offered no hint of the board's behind-the-scenes drama.

On Sunday, April 2, Wagoner had asked the board for a vote of confidence.

Had he failed to receive that endorsement, he was prepared to resign, says a source familiar with the board's deliberations.

During its Sunday meeting, the board met to approve the sale of General Motors Acceptance Corp. After they wrapped up their discussion of GMAC, the company's outside directors gave Wagoner the endorsement he had requested.

Should've let him go.
Roger Penske would make a fine replacement. Or Lutz.

Re: GM drama: We almost lost Rick

This makes sense to me. I'm sure he'd been hearing grumblings and wanted to call everyone out and make sure he wasn't wasting his time. If he's trying to implement sweeping change, nothing will work unless the other board members back him. Not to mention that rumors would only further hurt the stock and morale even further. So he put it to rest quickly.

Lutz is a car guy. That would be like me running the company. I would get too emotional and dedicated to the product, and not to everything else that goes with running the company. Its the exact opposite of what GM has now. They need to find a businessman who knows and loves cars...thats hard to find.

Golsen are you mad? that man is about to run Nissan into the ground. Maybe not long term, but they've just created a huge bump in the road for themselves.

Wait, wait, wait.... The exact opposite of what GM has now? My knee jerk reaction to that is "What a wonderful idea..."

Carlos Ghosen.....................YEAH RIGHT.
Nissan's problems are no where near as complex as GM's. Ghosen might have been somewhat successful at nissan but he would fail miserably at GM.
Where is Nissan's quality ratings? The cars have style but thats about it. How many different motors? 2
Come ON! I am tired about hearing Carlos running GM, Rick is the best man for this job because he has already done how much, look at what he has done overseas, his mgmt. team, the huge obstacles he had to overcome, GM is a huge ship and it needs time to turn around but once it does and proceeds on its path, nothing will stop it.

I'll give Rick 3 more years to finish his plan, thats it, by then the new pickups will be out and running, lambas, zetas in full swing, hybrids in many models, new caddys, buicks and pontiacs and saturn will be kicking butt.

Many people might say this is a bad time for GM but I think it is a great time, look at all the new product, its really good and its getting better with every new vehicle.

Re: GM drama: We almost lost Rick

No wonder Ricky is all arrogant about how he thinks no one knows the business like him. He unmasked the board of good-for-nothings to be the fools they are. Still, he shouldn't intrepret that as an endorsement, more like a "we don't have anyone else at this moment."
Ghosn is too busy running Renault-Nissan. Not to mention that he has ruined Nissan quality.
Still, Rick, stop playing political maneouvers and work on stopping GM's losses and on improving quality of cars.

Re: GM drama: We almost lost Rick

The GM board is incompetent. Look at their backgrounds. They have no knowledge of the auto industry among them. Some will argue that this is not needed in a board, but I believe some knowledge of the auto industry is needed badly.

I still want to know what the vote was? Was it barely a majority? Unanimous? Tie that had to be broken by the President of the Senate?
