Re: GM dedicates Mexico complex that will build Aveo

Four speed transmission?
Four speed transmission?
Was this plant opening message sent from 1976?

Gas up the Delorean Marty, we're headed back in time to get a ground-breaking transmission design for the new Aveo.

Well, that $25 a day would be greatly appreciated in Mexico while the $75 (benefits included) an hour by a UAW worker would be laughed at and deemed "not enough" by a UAW worker. Why on God's green earth would GM ever build another factory in Michigan with these circumstances!

Yes. It boggles my mind.

Many people don't understand that Mexican and Chinese workers aren't working for "slave wages." The costs of living in other parts of the world are completely different.

Just because some factory worker in Vietnam earns $5 USD a day making shoes for Nike, that doesn't mean he is getting screwed. He probably earns more than most other manual laborers in Vietnam.

Re: GM dedicates Mexico complex that will build Aveo

To expand on that thought..............

Fords Hermosillo plant, which produces the Fusion, Milan, and MKZ, is highly coveted for jobs. For those who actually want to work, you will recieve well above average wages, food, housing, and schools.

The plants that Ford, GM, and Chrysler build in Mexico, substantially raise the standard of living in those areas. Of course, most "anti anywhere but the US/Canada" fans don't care about the facts................. and love to spew lies of exploitation.

I think it is great that GM will start production of the Aveo in North America. Now they just need to make the car good, and they may have something.

It looks like the Aveos made in this plant will not be sold in the US, but only in Mexico and South America.

Everyone understands that. The problem is when people say we cannot compete and act like it's because we somehow are the only country with lazy workers or the ever popular "it's the unions fault". No we have a much higher cost of living so even if the American worker is the hardest worker on the planet the 3rd world country employee only needs a fraction of the pay to live an average lifestyle in their country.

Re: GM dedicates Mexico complex that will build Aveo

cananyone explain why gm is spending money building a brand-new plant when they could simply retoll one of the closed plants and save money?

Earlier reports suggested the cars would also be marketed in the US and Canada... which makes sense. Is this press release just wrong?

Probably not a misprint. It is an 80% manual process. The labor wage are low enough that it beats the ROI on automation and Robots at 30 jph..

The plant will produce up to 60 jobs/hour once the Delta and Gamma SUV's come on line. At which point there will be more automation and more labor added.

Re: GM dedicates Mexico complex that will build Aveo

Well, HoosierRon, you and I are usually in agreement and I too wish that GM could have invested in Michigan.
However, wishing won't make it so. Within the past year or so, Michigan's Governor and the State legislature have raised Michigan's taxes to the point that it is no longer 11th but is now the 5th highest taxed state in the Union.
Michigan's political "leaders" are leading it over the cliff.
Cheers,
Ed

Rumor has it that in addition to the Aveo, this factory also is going to make 19 passenger Suburbans.
