GM Canada May sales

GM Canada May sales

Oshawa, Ontario (June 1, 2005) – General Motors of Canada dealers and retailers delivered a total of 45,701 vehicles in May. Truck sales increased by 8.6% in May with sales of 22,620 units and passenger car sales of 23,081 units decreased by 13.0%compared to the same period last year. Overall GM Canada vehicle sales decreased 3.3% from May 2004.

Marc Comeau, GM of Canada’s vice-president of sales, service and marketing said, “We are pleased to see that sales of our new vehicles continue to gain sales momentum including the Buick Allure, Pontiac G6, Cadillac STS, Chevrolet Malibu, Chevrolet Equinox, the Chevrolet Uplander and the Pontiac Montana SV6. The recently announced 2005 J.D. Power and Associates Initial Quality sweep by our Canadian car assembly plants further underlines the great quality built into our vehicles.”

GM entry-level car sales were up 10% in May which include the all-new Pontiac Wave / Pursuit and the Chevrolet Cobalt / Aveo. As well, both the Chevrolet Malibu and the Saturn Ion achieved double-digit increases in the month. Sales of the quality award winning Buick Allure grew 35.3% over the month and continue to grow sales in Canada. Cadillac sales represent a 55% increase, the best May sales month since 1993, including the Cadillac CTS recording a 193% increase over the same period in 2004.

Total GM truck sales increased 8.6% in the month. Strong compact SUV sales including the hot-selling Ingersoll-built Chevrolet Equinox more than doubled their sales in May compared to the same period a year ago. Sales almost tripled in May for the Oshawa-built Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra crew cabs.

For the third time in four years, GM Canada’s Oshawa Car Assembly Plant has been rated the best in North and South America in the J.D. Power and Associates Initial Quality Study. The Oshawa Car Plant 2 takes the Gold Plant Quality Award for the second time and Oshawa Car Plant 1 take the Silver Plant Quality Award.

Why can't GM USA do as well as GM Canada?

We need to send some GM Canada guys down the highway to Detroit to help out!

Great news, starting to see a lot of Allures, Cobalts and G6s now.

I've speculated on that many times, but one of the biggest reasons, I think, is price. Allures, Cobalts, and to a lesser extent G6s are MSRPed right, unlike in the US. (None of that "Allure competes with Lexus" BS... the GM Canada people know they were handed a credibly Camry competitor and that's what they compete with)

The other is marketing... many of the US GM commercials I've seen are highly sketchy, especially those LaCrosse "the car you've been dreaming of is the car we've been dreaming up" ones that don't say anything.

A little perspective, please. How did the overall market do? Cuz if the market was off by more than 3.3%, then GM gained share [obviously].

lCar sales nosedive in May

STEVE ERWIN, CP 2005-06-02 01:56:15

TORONTO -- New vehicle sales slid in May on both sides of the Canada-U.S. border, forcing hard-hit General Motors and Ford to warn of third-quarter production cuts that could affect jobs and Ontario's overall economy.

Sales in Canada dropped 3.1 per cent in May compared to the same month a year ago, led by drops at each of the Big Three.

Sales by Mitsubishi, Volks-wagen and Suzuki were also down in May. Asian automakers Toyota, Honda and Nissan all gained market share, but even their May performances fell below the gains they had been accomplishing earlier this year.

It was the worst Canadian new vehicle sales performance since 1999 for the month of May -- traditionally the biggest selling month of the year for dealers -- despite major incentive programs offered to consumers on dealer lots.
So, GM's sales really just followed market trends...

Re: GM Canada May sales

Last May must have been good for GM since there is a slight drop in sales from may 04 but there is an increase in sales through 2005, it seems that GM can sell cars better everywhere BUT the US

Or send some US plants up here. Provincial health care would help GM out immensely

According to the dealership, Canada is only getting about 550 units. That not even 1 car per dealer. They said they were only getting 1 SS and that it was already sold. They could be wrong however....

Canada has a large economy segment in which GM performs very well, the US has a larger mid-size segment than Canada, in which GM doesn't perform as well as many import brands. That's the main difference between GM and GM Canada's market segmentation.
