GM: April Sales Are "Off To A Decent Start"

Link: http://biz.yahoo.com/rb/060410/autos_gm_sales.html?.v=2

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - General Motors has posted stronger vehicle sales in early April than the automaker recorded in March, Paul Ballew, GM's market analyst told investors on Monday.

"April is off to a decent start," Ballew said at a conference sponsored by Morgan Stanley and monitored by Webcast. "I caution everyone that it is early, very early, but we like the start."

Ballew said GM's sales results to date for April showed some improvement from March, when overall vehicle sales dropped almost 15 percent.

Does that mean the Fleet sales are back in the mix?

I have no way of knowing, but based on the title of the above named executive, I doubt it.

Two reasons -

-Fleet sales are usually reported at the end of each month.

-GM told Wall Street last month that they would try to decrease fleet sales. I doubt they would go back on their word so very soon.

Oh, "DECENT." You can take that kind of sales result right to the bank.

I like that he specified that sales were improved from last month. I really don't like it when they make YOY comparisons because it doesn't show current momentum of sales.

Ah yes but how else will the short sellers of GM stock get their negaitve stories!!

In all seriousness, I think both types of comparisions should be used. Month to month tracking (i.e. March - April) does indicate short term trends, but YOY comparisons also account for seasonality in sales, and longer term trends which are just as important (if not more so) than short term trends.

in other words

"the sales are better than last month's but not better than last april's; so brace yourself for a year on year decline"

the industry always compares sales with the corresponding month of the previous year. if the sales were really better than april 2005 he would have mentioned exactly that!

I'll say the same thing I say when NYT or some other publication says that the domestics are off to a rough start for a month: Wait till the month is over.

Re: GM: April Sales Are "Off To A Decent Start"

YOY comparisons are important because there are some months that people prefer to buy cars in, so comparing a winter month to a summer month wouldn't really give you an accurate picture. Now, as far as new models a MOM comparison is much better showing whether the model is gaining traction in the market or not.

Re: GM: April Sales Are "Off To A Decent Start"

I have 2 words for you before everyone gets all excited..... TAX RETURNS.
That is the only reason, why else would the first week in April be going any better than March? Because people who filed between the mid-February and mid March and now getting their checks or deposits.

I'll be excited if May has the same start as April, because I don't see April holding on strong.

Re: GM: April Sales Are "Off To A Decent Start"

I think it will be an increase over April of last year.

I am finally seeing more cobalts, impalas, new tahoes/escalades, HHR, G6 and Lucernes.
The new GM vehicles really stand out than what they used to.
On the negative side, I have only seen 2 G6 coupes, no malibu or cobalts SS, no solstice yet, only 2 impala SS and it seems the newer malibu (updated grill) has not made a big impact yet where I live.
I live in jersey so I see plenty of cars everyday, its actually depressing.
