GM to add two models to new Oshawa car plant-report

GM to add two models to new Oshawa car plant-report
Mon Jul 28, 2008 7:54am EDT

TORONTO, July 28 (Reuters) - General Motors of Canada (GM.N: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) is expected to announce on Monday that it will add two more vehicle models to its new Oshawa car plant and extend pay packages for senior workers as part of a union settlement tied to the closure of its truck plant, a national newspaper said.

The Globe and Mail daily, citing sources familiar with the deal, said on Monday the Detroit-based automaker will earmark the new car models for the new flexible car plant set to open later this year, bringing the number of vehicles to be assembled at the plant to four.

The paper, citing U.S.-based sources, said the plant will eventually assemble the rear-wheel-drive Camaro, a front-wheel drive version of the Chevrolet Impala, a Buick model and one other vehicle.

The move could open up some car-plant jobs for 2,600 employees who will be thrown out of work when GM Canada, as announced in June, shuts its nearby truck plant in the third-quarter of 2009 amid slumping demand for larger trucks .

The FWD Impala is the old W body Impala.
1 - Camaro (ZETA)
2 - STS/Lucerne (ZETA)
3 - Impala (W-body....recent article last week says current Impala to stay till 2012)
4 - G8 (ZETA....orignally, we were going to get 2 years of Holden-bult G8, then switch to Oshawa for 2010MY...could they be going back to this plan?)

Re: GM to add two models to new Oshawa car plant-report

Wouldn't it make more sense given what the plant is manufacturing for the Impala to become RWD on the Zeta platform? Then you could manufacture Camaro, Impala, G8, and Lucerne replacement, and all would be the same basic platform underneath. Oh wait, that's LOGICAL, MAKES SENSE, and would be a hit with CUSTOMERS (referring to the RWD Impala)......no wonder GM isn't doing it.....

Yeah, the Globe and Mail article I read was sketchy on details, but, the jist of it was the Impala would be given a 'new lease on life' till atleast 2012. It also talked about how CAFE regulations was putting a nail in the plans for a RWD drive Imapala anytime soon. Thos two points was ALL the article said about the Impala so putting 2 and 2 together, to me, it seems like we will see the W-body till 2012 as GM tries to figure out what they are gonna do about CAFE and how a RWD vs FWD Impala would affect their ratings...

I tried making my case for a RWD Impala being the easiest and cheapest way out.
I am not convinced that a large Epsilon 2 car will weight less then a standard wheel base Impala would. But I guess thats up to GM.

GM's been "about to build" a RWD sedan for Buick since, when, 2004?

Given how obese the Malibu is and that the G8 doesn't weigh significantly more than that, I would have to guess that there will be ZERO weight savings for a FWD Impala on a stretched EP2 platform. Plus it will still be FWD.....

Re: GM to add two models to new Oshawa car plant-report

How can no one have guessed the answer as it stares us in the face?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
What car would GM NOT tell us about at this moment in time???
Think.....
Think.....
A little bit more....
Almost there.......

The Firebird guys!

GM won't announce the Firebird until NAIAS 2010 and then release it that Fall as a 2011 or 2012 model. Cost saving measures to help the initial cost of the Camaro!
