Autoline Detroit reported yesterday that variable valve timing would be offered on the 4.8 and 5.3 V8 next year, in addition to the existing 6 and 6.2s. It is my understanding that vvt and di are steps along the path to hcci combustion with a 15% fuel economy increase. The day of solid 30 mpg highway with an LS V8 is not far off. I've read the the DI is due next year, my guess in trucks first, then the new Caprice and XTS.
