G.M. Held Merger Talks With Ford Before Chrysler

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/10/12/bu...12auto.html?hp

Before General Motors began exploring a possible merger with Chrysler — talks that first came to light on Friday — G.M. proposed a similar deal with its other cross-town rival, the Ford Motor Company, two people with knowledge of the talks said Saturday.

These stories are kind of funny because you don't usually hear companies in their state thinking merger. Maybe GM doesn't realize the shape they're in. Or maybe they're anxious to gobble up their competitors before they hit the reset button and file bankruptcy. I can see a partnership with one or the other, more Ford than Chrysler, but I can't for the life of me see how taking on one or the other is going to boost GM's bottom line any time soon.

Two week companies merging is a recipe for disaster. There is so much overlap in products and whole divisions that this makes no sense. GM can't manage the divisions it has currently what makes Rick think he can manage 3 more?

I thought the GM-Ford merger talks were just a rumor. Now that's a merger that would not make sense.

I believe that is probably a very accurate analysis.

Madness... Ford management was right to reject this stupidity.

Ford's goal right now is to vastly reduce the complexity of its operations on a global basis, and to guard its cash reserves. Ford has the cash on hand to survive, thanks to prudent financial management, which is why I've always been perplexed that all the bad news is "GM and Ford", when in fact, their positions couldn't be more different.
