France's Peugeot won't consider merger with GM's Opel

    Wednesday, Dec 26th, 2012

General Motors' German subsidiary won't be merging with French automaker Peugeot Citroen even though the two parties are cooperating on a number of future products, a new report indicates.

An unnamed Peugeot manager told France's Autogazette that PSA, the parent company of Peugeot and Citroen, will go it alone despite significant hurdles to recovering in the struggling European new car market.

"[A merger] has never been an issue during the discussions," Peugeot's German market chief, Olivier Dardart, said in response to a question about how far the alliance between the two brands has begun to stretch.

How about, Opel will not consider merger with Peugeot. We all knew from the get go that neither GM nor Peugeot PSA intended to merge sell or buy anyone

PSA clearly needs to take some reality-pills - they are in no position to "go it alone" How do they intend funding this approach? Most assets are sold, the French gvmt is guaranteeing the bank, they're burning Euro 200m per month, their market cap is below Eur $2bn, debt is junk, shares will likely be on negative outlook. Either merge with Opel whilst they still might have some say or be nationalised (and probably absorbed by Renault). If a merger were to happen ensure there is none of the nonsense of GM paying billions for a minority stake in a merged company (a value of a corporation isn't based on revenue.)

This is about as messy as a couple of drunks waking up together with their best friends mates and then getting prego.

I don't think Opel could handle all of PSAs baggage without the French guvment ponying up about $10 billion to cover restructuring and, gasp!, shrinking PSAs manufacturing footprint. That would rival the insanity of the dems and their fiscal cliff stance of continuing to grow government at businesses expense.

The French government will pick up the tab. Smart move by PSA.

Some work with GM to fund new projects is fine for both as it splits the cost to a degree.
