Development of vehicles leaving the U.S., By 2013 90% of Vehicles "Not Invented Here"

Automotive News Brent Snavely 5-14-2007 p.56-57:

By 2013 vehicle development for more than 90% of the cars and trucks sold worldwide will take place outside the U.S., according to research firm CSM Worldwide. Moving product development people to parts of the world where the market is growing. North America is becoming an automotive market that will mostly conduct secondary vehicle development.

A set of graphs shows that in 2013 North America will develop vehicles with 6 million annual sales (down from 10 in 2006), Europe will develop 30 (up from 20), and Asia will develop 42 (up from 28).

The article closes by saying that Michigan will remain a major location, but those graphs suggest otherwise.

In other words, the engineering jobs are leaving.

Off to India and China... for 1/4 the cost. (my estimate)

The jobs go where the engineers are. India and China are graduating their best and brightest. In America..., well let's jsut say that the PC liberal takeover of the universities has not served us well.

There we go again, talking absolute rubbish. As an engineer, I agree with you that our education system is headed nowhere but down. But I don't think it has anything to do with being liberal. The first step would be to completely overhaul our school education system. Frankly, it's a huge joke compared to the rest of the world. And "NCLB" has done nothing but make it worse.

Re: Forecaster: Development of vehicles leaving the U.S.

As a aspiring Mechanical (Automotive) Engineer this kind of scares me, but I going to hold on to my dream of becoming an Automotive Engineer. I'm going to embark on this 5 year journey (of hard studying) this fall. Hopefully GM will have a position for me.

There are no new engineers. 90 percent of the engineering students at one local state university are from China and India, and plan to return home once they graduate. But you'll find plenty of American student at the same college enrolled in conflict management, gender studies, recreation and leisure studies, post colonial studies...

it sucks that in order to lower costs they are getting rid of the smart jobs, like engineering so that they can afford to pay the UAW workers huge salaries to slap together car parts, instead of the other way around.

It would be nice to see a little more emphasis on science and mathematics in our schools. This is what happens when education focuses on coddling students and their parents rather than manufacturing excellence.

Re: Forecaster: Development of vehicles leaving the U.S.

It would help if we had more involved parents. Given the necessity of many families to have two adults working to survive, and the very high percentage of single-parent households, and the dearth of quality pre and post school affordable childcare, and the lag in real wages relative to cost of living, we got what we got. It'll only get worse unless we get serious about various social issues.
