Delphi, GM, IUE-CWA agree on worker buyout plans

CHICAGO (MarketWatch) -- Delphi Corp. cut a deal with one of its unions and General Motors that will "incentivize" employees to take early retirement or buyouts of up to $140,000, the bankrupt auto-parts giant said late Friday.
The agreement with the IUE-CWA is similar to one already in place with the UAW.

I know this was announced before, but this is major news, why has no one responded to this? Is everyone trying to think of a way to bash the UAW or what?

Perhaps we'd just rather see them take their buyouts and go away quietly so GM can get to the business of competing with Asian transplants like Toyota, Honda, etc. on a more level playing field. If said Asian (and Euro) transplants can have factories in the U.S. unshackled by Unions, and Amercians could apparently care less that they are non-Union while they buy their cars and work for them, then GM (and Ford) should not be hamstrung by the threat of strikes or contracts made in a different era of competition, and the sooner they can change that situation, the better.

And until the UAW can establish themselves in Honda plants in the U.S., for instance, I really don't want to hear how "unfair" everything is for them.

If they can't manage to convince Import transplants to allow them to set up shop in their factories, and won't make concessions to Detroit-based companies so that they're just as lean and mean as the Transplant workers, then its not a level playing field, and they are just dragging GM and Ford down.

No...they will wait until these employees are officially retired and the "legacy factor" whine will start, then they will call them lazy and it's all their fault and blah,blah,blah...blah. Mark my words.

Re: Delphi, GM, IUE-CWA agree on worker buyout plans

Ming hit the nail on the head... I just want the union to get out of the way as much as possible so the General can quit worrying about it and get back to work.

johnny- I don't have to think very hard or look very far if I feel like union bashing. Here's a great example of the effect that unions have on costs: http://music.yahoo.com/read/news/33316323

There seem to be 3 standard union responses to any criticism of the UAW:

1) You're just jealous
2) If the unions go away, the middle class will disappear
3) If the unions go away, everyone will become a company slave

None of them are true.

Re: Delphi, GM, IUE-CWA agree on worker buyout plans

Great, take a 25 year old who's had three years in the company, essentially a big gift all three years at $27/hr .. and give him $70K to leave. That's one he11 of a way to spend corporate money when the shareholders have gone bust. Was somebody talking about bankruptcy being a way to waste money on execs? I think some of these union folk oughta be kicked out the door they walked in. I can see helping a 50 year-old who'd have a tough time on the job market and with 2 kids entering college. But giving more than 3 months wages to people under 40 years old and with under 10 years of service is a joke.

It doesn't matter what is done,YOU will always find something to biatch about. You biatch about too many UAW workers, then you Biatch about they make too much$$, the way you complain you would think that the individual UAW worker makes ALL the decisions for GM. They are only workers just like you, they don't write the rules management does.
