Congratulations to Ford and GM for a well deserved heads up!
Or maybe they realized that supporting a failing brand like Toyota may get them a lot less viewers, supporters, and backers...

Exactly.

Sure is nice to see both Ford and GM being reported more favorably - which is about as useful as saying CR is such as swell group of people - look, they only stole half a loaf this time.

How in the heck can they even think they can get away with failing to mention so much that's relevant - like recalls and safety issues including serious legal challenges and continue to diverge from other overlapping reporting systems is really something.

GM and Ford are for sure easily twice as good as CR 'reports' ( as is Chrysler and all the Euros ) - and now many at Ford and GM to name just two are in front of much of the Asians HQ'ed brands offerings.

While I don't agree with CR's testing ratings and procedures, their reliability ratings are the real deal.

From the same rag that recommends garbage throw away bagless vacuum cleaners that we constantly get in day after day for repairs tells me how accurate there data is on cars. At least the appliance CamCord drivers will think that something from America is worthy of there consideration which can't hurt.

I wish Chrysler would get its act together. You're not going to sell more cars with reliability like this. Too bad they're owned by Fiat now as Europeans are utterly unconcerned with reliability.

Once the Civics, Camrys (Camries?) and Altimas are stripped of their aura of superiority a lot of consumers will be leave them for more exciting American cars or less expensive Korean cars. The Japanese manufacturers have a lot of eggs in one basket.

Just a question: How can their reliability ratings be "the real deal" when you yourself question the validity of the means (procedures) in which those ratings are compiled?

Is there a better way to determine how happy people are with their purchase? If I were a subscriber, I'd say my sky is fun to drive, but is quickly turning into a POS, and my wifes Aura has me wished we'd bought an Acccord instead. How is that for unbiased?

Should I shun a car that I like because it's 1% less reliable than the one they recommend? There's no way to tell. Not to mention they survey only their own readers, and without verifying the results that I know of (i.e., does the person sending in a survey about an Accord been verified as an Accord owner, with a valid registration?) Garbage.
Somewhere in that issue is a breakdown of the numbers they use.

You should have put new belts on the old ones!

There is a psychological element to all these "reliability" data.
Some owners are more likely than others to report problems.
There's a reason why for some years, Sables got better reliability ratings than Taurii. I would suspect older owners with greater brand loyalty knew their complaints/reports would generate negative numbers so they did not report.

A certain percentage of survey-takers also simply lie.

I doubt CR takes any of that into consideration.
These factors could make for an interesting master's thesis or doctoral dissertation, however.

Really?? Find it and answer the question, what percentage less reliable is a Chrysler 300 than a Toyota Avalon? And what's their statistical margin for error?
