Tuesday, March 06, 2007

WASHINGTON — Rep. Lloyd Doggett, D-Austin, filed a bill Monday that would offer $3,000 to $6,150 in tax credits for people who buy new plug-in hybrid passenger cars.
As we know, GM is promising the Volt by 2010.

This is good news for GM and buyers of the Volt when it comes out in a few years.

Yeah, but let's see what the state governments do... Oregon, for example, makes hybrid owners pay double for registration tabs, because they "don't pay their fair share of gas tax to maintain the roads"

Guess which company will be the biggest recipient of this taxpayer largess?

Why do you even post here?
To show off your boorish manners?
To make people think even less of you than we already do?

Just for GMIers that haven't been exposed to your self-evident narcissism and incessant Toyota butt-trumpeting.......

It's ok to lie about SULEV as long as you don't get called on it?

A Prius is only good for 60K miles before it hits the trash heap?
Now that's environmentally friendly.

A Power Split Device and all its attendant complexity is far superior to a much more efficient series hybrid?

Bravo!
At the very least your posts are consistently mind-numbingly insipid.

Re: Congress proposes $6,150 tax credit for Plug-in HEVs

The federal government and our elected representatives know they cannot get a increase in the federal gas tax passed in order to decrease gasoline consumption, so they're taking the opposite tack and looking at paying people to buy plug-in hydrids.

Of course, the positive effect would be far less since almost 100% of the vehicles on the road in the U.S. still use gasoline or diesel. Hybrids account for only 1.82% of new car sales (as of last month's data - Feb Autodata), and they only got that in the last couple of years, so when you add that into the existing population of cars, you can see you're almost at the 100% figure for vehicles that use gasoline or diesel in the U.S. It would be far more effective to raise the gas tax if the intent is to decrease gasoline consumption. But, giving a tax credit on plug-in hybrids that hardly anyone is buying would give our public servants the political cover to state that they're doing something to solve our "addiction to oil".

Now, if GM could make (and sell) about 500,000 Chevrolet Volts in 2010, it's a different calculus. . .

Yes, but politics is the enemy of sound economics...

If anything, politicians seem more inclined to LOWER the gas tax to give voters "a break" at the pump...

I can not wait for the Volt! I will even take a used EV-1, which BTW came out a few years before those Toyota things, which have some hidden numbers!

Now that's a constructive reply!

The one before it certainly wasn't.

Re: Congress proposes $6,150 tax credit for Plug-in HEVs

So assuming best case scenario, if a Volt is $25,000 before the tax credit, then it would only be a net cost of $18,850 with it! Plus much cheaper fuel bills....very nice! Let's get this car into customers' hands ASAP, GM!

Oh, and the idea that Oregon is charging higher registration fees for hybrids is really a B.S. policy, regardless of one's personal opinion of hybrid vehicles.

I guess all drivers with gasoline cars will pay for everybody to maintain the roads? How's that fair? Theoretically hybrid owner will pollute less but a vehicle may wear the highways more than "low milage per year" regular gas user. So hybrid owner pay less taxes and passes the bill for highway infrastructure to somebody else.

If I remember correctly, Oregon has no sales tax. The state has to make up the $$$ somewhere. Maybe the Oregonians (sp?) would rather pay accessive property taxes to make up the difference.

IMHO the Volt looked awesome. Much better in person than in the online pictures. I'd like to think GM could get this to market late next summer rather than having to wait until late 2009 for a 2010 launch.

I'll keep hoping and praying anyway!
