Chrysler/UAW tentative agreement reached

Happy Ending To Detroit Drama
Joann Muller 10.10.07, 1:45 PM ET

Chrysler and the United Auto Workers union have reached a tentative agreement on a new labor deal, sources at both the company and the union confirmed.

Sources said UAW President Ronald L. Gettelfinger was meeting with his bargaining committee at midday to review the proposed contract terms and that an announcement would be forthcoming.

The deal came less than an hour after thousands of Chrysler workers walked off the job at 11 a.m. Detroit time, the union-imposed bargaining deadline. (See "Chrysler Workers Walk Out")

It was the second time in two weeks that autoworkers went on strike against a major American carmaker – proof of the enormous challenge in trying to transform a struggling industry.

Last month, 73,000 UAW workers went on strike against General Motors for two days, until GM agreed to guarantee future jobs at U.S. factories.

Details of the accord to end the Chrysler strike were not immediately available, although a company source said the pact includes a plan to shift retiree health-care expenses to an independent voluntary employee benefits association, or VEBA, trust fund, similar to part of the GM deal.

The brief strike would not be too damaging at Chrysler, which had a 71-day supply of vehicles on dealer lots at the end of August, according to Ward’s AutoInfoBank. The automaker had already planned to idle five assembly plants and some parts-making factories during the next two weeks in an effort to pare its inventory. The UAW represents 45,000 workers at Chrysler’s 24 U.S. factories, including 10 assembly plants.

Chrysler is now controlled by the private-equity firm Cerberus Capital Management, which bought an 80% stake in the American carmaker from Germany’s DaimlerChrysler.

WTH? Already? Well, I guess that's a good thing but Chrysler could've kept them out on the picket lines for the week just because they aren't doing anything else anyways.....

I wonder if this is a record for the shortest strike ever. What was the point of even going on strike if it was going to be so short.

My guess would be a publicity stunt.

Someone blinked ... there was no agreement at 11... either Chryler told them "look we will have your people at $200 a week for 70 days - we are ok, are they?" and UAW budged, or Chrysler budged to the UAW demand.

Suprisingly, this has notbeen reported yet by either Autonews of the Big3 blogs; Jalopnik, Autoblog or LLN...

they simply recycled them from theGm stike .. and keep them around until the Ford deal is done .. which will not be any walk in the park - in some ways Ford is asking for most concessions ..

I saw a uncamo'd ford flex buzzing down mound road the other day. Didn't look bad. Looked like a captured test fleet vehicle. prototype number was marker written on the bumper.

I don't see this anywhere else. Just what kind of happy ending are they talking about anyway?

Re: Happy Ending To Detroit Drama - Chrysler/UAW tentative agreement reached

i just read the updated article on automotive news' website. it was updated at 3:42 pm eastern and has no mention of the strike being over. according to the article i read, both sides have left the table and have not set a time to sit back down together. which is right??
