CAW Leader Reports Progress With GM

CAW Union Leader More Upbeat About Talks
Monday September 26, 12:53 pm ET
By Beth Duff-Brown, Associated Press Writer

TORONTO (AP) -- The president of the Canadian Auto Workers union said Monday that labor talks with General Motors Corp. had progressed over the weekend and he was optimistic that a looming strike by some 22,000 workers could be averted.

But CAW president Buzz Hargrove, who set a strike deadline for midnight Tuesday, cautioned there were still key contentions that could derail the talks, mainly a desire by GM to cut two minutes from the relief breaks that workers get on assembly lines and the possible outsourcing of construction work in Ontario plants.

General Motors did not immediately return calls Monday.

"We're close enough to do this, but far enough away to fall in the ditch," Hargrove told a news conference. "We're feeling somewhat better this morning, although we're not there."

He said that GM -- which led the Big Three automakers with revenues last year, but is saddled with huge health care and pension liabilities -- had agreed in principle with the union's requests.

Article continues at link.

Now this is simply my opinion, but it just doesn't sound like GM is garnering major concessions on health care and pension reform as promised by corporate leaders recently...

Well, at least with the CAW healthcare isn't a concession, though its too bad that they seem to not want to make concessions to GM to help...

Wagoner's too yellow to do what's gotta be done. If he doesn't get the concessions, particularly with the UAW, the company's gonna be so close to going broke, that'll be the end of his job.

Dear Rick,

It's either our way or the highway.
Especially since you seem to have a severe [name of body part] deficiency.
Bend over while we kick you some more, fancy lad.
BTW, you will writhe in screaming agony surrounded by burning flames before those two minutes ever provide any meaningful work.
We own you.
Have a nice Day!

Your friend Buzz

It's the user ranking system.

Post 2000 more posts, and you'll be a 4.6L Northstar... 5000 more, and you'll be a Cadillac V16, etc.

If that's the major sticking point, then it means that most of the hard issues got resolved...

Tomorrow they'll announce a 1 minute cut in the break time, is my bet.

Market Pulse: CAW union says still talking with GM
Tuesday September 27, 6:30 am ET
By Steve Goldstein

LONDON (MarketWatch) -- The Canadian CAW union said it's still in talks with General Motors though "a lot of work remains." The union said in a statement that seven subcommittees have wrapped up bargaining, but the local bargaining committees and the remaining subcommittees will be working on outstanding issues including job security.

Just to clarify, posting for the sake of simply advancing your rank is discouraged, I think...
