Bosch & Getrag To Develop Dual-Clutch Hybrid

Bosch, Getrag To Develop Dual-Clutch Hybrid

Marton Pettendy
7 June 2006

www.goauto.com.au

Bosch and Getrag have signed an agreement to develop a petrol-electric drive system in unison with a dual-clutch transmission.

Announced this week, the deal will unite two of the most effective new automotive technologies - hybrid power and a double-clutch automatic gearbox.

Getrag is already a dual-clutch transmission specialist, while Bosch has knowledge of power electronics. Together, the German companies will develop and market a parallel hybrid system in conjunction with a dual-clutch auto and electrical final-drive unit.

The companies say the energy-efficient shifting ability of a dual-clutch transmission is ideally suited to a parallel hybrid system, in which the electric drive is part of the powertrain to provide regenerative energy when braking.

DaimlerChrysler, BMW and General Motors have formed a partnership to develop a hybrid drive system for a range of petrol-electric models from 2007, but Bosch and Getrag remain confident car-makers will generate demand for their joint-venture hybrid system.

"The cooperation we have established with the world's largest supplier to the automotive industry is highly promising for the future development of hybrid drive technology," said Getrag Group chairman Dieter Schlenkermann.

"The know-how of both companies will put us in the position to offer our customers throughout the world cutting-edge solutions for future drive concepts."

Bosch's Automotive Group chairman Dr Bernd Bohr concurs: "Together we can offer automobile manufacturers a highly integrated and compact hybrid system that will enable low fuel consumption and excellent vehicle dynamics."

Japan doesn't NEED to copy it. Toyota has their own hybrid system for sale--and they'll buy from Toyota long before they buy from a non-Japanese company.

what have you been smoking? Delphi can barely pay their legal bills in bankruptcy court and you've got them buying a $20 billion a year supplier now? German suppliers like Bosch, Getrag, Continental, ZF, Siemens, etc. have money to develop new high-tech products so they keep growing. Delphi and Visteon on the other hand...never mind.

I am guessing ford will get their hands on this, since they own a big chunk of getrag.

Re: Bosch & Getrag To Develop Dual-Clutch Hybrid

GM needs to get the 7 speed Sentronic Driver Shift Control (DSC) system out soon. I have a feeling these systems will be the new arena every company piles in on.

Kool ZX3, does Ford really own them? Ford seems to turn to Aisin more than Getrag!

And Delphi won't be able to buy Bosch. Bosch is way bigger than GM right now in terms of market capitalization, last I knew.

Dual clutch? Sure, why not have a real automatic/stickshift. When you want to switch to the manual mode, the clutch on the floor will be operable. When it's time to switch to automatic mode, just ignore the clutch on the floor, as it will work automatically.

That's like saying GM should just cough up some cash and buy Toyota. Bosch is the largest automotive supplier in the world with sales over $50 bil a year, in quite good health and privately held.

You would have to have two clutch pedals, keep one engaged and the other one disengaged, and when it's time to shift reverse their roles in 10ms. Doesn't sound like a fun activity.

Re: Bosch & Getrag To Develop Dual-Clutch Hybrid

They don't own Getrag. The two companies just have joint-ventures in Europe.
