AutoBlog: Bob Lutz on Cars

How refreshing -- an American who is an economic nationalist.

Re: New Lutz video - this man needs to run for president

He's way too smart for the job you suggest but I do agree we need someone that's a forward thinker that's for sure.

Good old Bob. He sure isn't afraid to tell it like it is.

Lutz shouldn't be president, because then he wouldn't work for GM.

Robert "Bob" A. Lutz (born February 12, 1932, in Zurich, Switzerland) He can't be president.

What I didn't know was he was a US Marine aviator 1954 - 1959 (remained in reserves until 1965).

Re: New Lutz video - this man needs to run for president

Yeah, he is a jarhead. He also owns several fighter jets, the man has it all. To throw it all away as the president would be silly. Im sure he could be head of something. Not to mention the man is old. On top of the fact that he is born out of this country, he is also known only to us. If he were to run, he would be the guy from GM, the company that makes the Hummer, big trucks and suv's and big cars that break...what would happen if he ran the country?

He seems like he could have went on for another hour talking just about technology. You can see how it hurts Lutz knowning that Toyota suddenly and seemingly overnight took away GM's Technology title.

Re: AutoBlog: Bob Lutz on Cars

talk about telling it like it is... this guy doesn't mess around

Bob is an amazing speaker... I was really into what he was talking about with making the mistake, correcting, and then hopefully smashing Toyota into the ground with the VOLT.

Exciting

The Captain speaks!! I have so much respect this guy it isnt funny. Ever since he did those LH cars for Chrysler I knew he would do wonders for GM with GM's superior industrial and design infrastructure.

On the first pass , this does seem the only downside but a large one at that .

However given the country is in even worse shape than GM ......AND that many of the reasons for that have negatively impacted GM ......Mr. Lutz could 'help' (legit) GM from the big chair .

Aw hell , lets get going and draft him here and now .

Re: AutoBlog: Bob Lutz on Cars

Bob Lutz is a great car guy and should remain in a position where his strengths can be put to good use. I'm not quite clear why people think that he would make a good president because of his strengths as a car exec. I recall watching a CNBC(?) interview of Bill Gates, when the sycophantic interviewer proclaimed that if Gates decided to start a cookie company, it would be the largest, most successful cookie company on the planet [because of Microsoft's success with software]. Bill rightfully smiled and said [paraphased], "I don't know the first thing about making cookies; my cookie company would probably fail." Perspective, people.

Oh, and Bob Lutz thankfully stepped up to plate in the video and clearly stated that GM execs didn't present the hybrid vehicle in the right light to the Board, who then rejected GM's pursuit of the hybrid. Trying to explain away a lack of vision is annoying. GM screwed up with not bringing out a hybrid early on (and thus allowing Toyota to enjoy the indirect benefit of all the good, free press of being "green"). Make a mistake, admit it, and move on, as GM appears to be doing. Americans' penchant for externalizing responsibility is getting really tired.
