When Cadillac launched the XTS last May we asked them if their brand new car would get an eight-speed transmission to better compete with the BMW, Lexus and Audi. Their answer? “Just wait.” Well it looks as if the wait may be coming to an end.

Our source, buried deep within General Motors, has said that yes, the General is working on new eight-speed transmissions across their vehicle lineup. Aside from the need for Cadillac to remain competitive with other luxury automakers, eight-speeds will allow for a higher fuel economy average across GM’s fleet. This last part is crucial in light of upcoming tougher Federal mileage standards. The eight-speed units will be both longitudinal (RWD/AWD) and transverse (FWD/AWD). This family of transmission is reportedly all new and not related to GM’s long-serving 6L family. We expect the longitudinal eight-speed will debut at the Detroit auto show in the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette.

If GM plans to use the Aisin 8A in the Corvette, they had better be all over this in testing. They must be relentless in making sure it's as good as any other GM designed tranny.

Aisin is 30% owned by the Toyota Group of companies. How can this be?

Small percentage, so they really have no say in who Aisin does business with.

Well, Toyota probably bought a 30% share in the company, if I had to guess.

I really hope the SS gets the LT1, and the new 8spd...that would make a pretty good sedan.

they better use ZF dual clutch 7 speed instead of Toyota 8 speed...
German is the best in technology..and leader...

if Cadillac is the standard of the world...they need to have something fancy and unique....
the future is Dual clutch trans....and why it not in a Standard of the world...why even Chrysler have it

so basically the SS is going to get all the old parts until GM runs out...that makes no since...the SS maro will probably have the new LT1 next year as well,...I think giving it the LT1, and the 8spd will make it appealing to the the people that are really into saving at the pump, but it is what it is I guess.

Doubtful on this one too....from what people have been saying around here, the Camaro will probably ride out calendar year 2014 with the LS3 until the new model comes.

Holden is always a couple years behind on moving to the new engines, that's most likely why the SS won't have it.

Re: 2014 Corvette, New Cadillacs to Use Aisin Eight-Speed Auto Before GM’s 8A Arrives

Does anyone remember that GM , and Toyota were actually 50/50 joint venture partners at one point? The Corvette, and the Escalade can not afford to launch without an 8 speed auto, and quite frankly I had hoped that it would be the ZF 8HP which easily shades the Aisin 8A.
I want a car so violent that the mere thought of full throttle would cause a heart attack. That actually going wide open throttle in would result in nothing less than instant death!

Not quite chief. When the C6 came out in 2005, the same year model GTO (built by Holden) got the LS2. Holden itself has never used the LS2 or LS3 in a street vehicle (those are for HSV), but since the GTO had no HSV input, Holden had the LS2s rolling down their assembly lines. Let's also not forget that the G8 would have gotten the LS3 in '08 if Pontiac would have had the GXP plans ready. Had there been a Camaro in 2008 when the LS3 was released, do you think GM would still run 2 different lines? I personally think not. Plus, if Chevy drops the LT1 into the Camaro, it would be a reason for some people to buy a new one, thereby helping to keep sales up. Kind of a similar idea to the Mustang MCE of 2010 followed a year later by the 5.0.

GM has used Aisin before. They did transmissions for Solstice/Sky and are currently going the auto in the Regal GS.
