10 Smart Used Cars for Teens

http://www.marketwatch.com/news/stor...eid=mktw&dist=

The following is AutoExtra.com's list of 10 used cars under $10,000.

"These 10 cars were designed to be reliable and, within their class, safe and efficient," said Clay Gill, vice president of AutoExtra.com, in Norfolk, Va., via an e-mail message.

"Since safety features are continually improving with each model year, these cars are also as late model year as possible and still remain under $10,000," she said.

1. 2001 Honda Civic DX
2. 2002 Toyota Corolla CE
3. 2001 Nissan Altima XE.
4. 2003 Hyundai Elantra GLS
5. 2003 Suzuki Aerio S

Re: 10 Smart Used Cars for Teens

Sheesh, I wish that my parents could've spent that much when I was looking for my first car. Instead they told me to buy it myself, and $400 dollars I had my '74 Duster. You want to talk about safety? Rolled it twice down a hill and it still ran like a champ even with the "lowrider Mercury" chop

But honestly, is safety what the teenager driver looking for? I thought that they want looks and performance...

# 2001 Mercury Cougar. "This Cougar has a distinctive look inside and out and has plenty of standard features like power windows, four bucket seats, power-heated mirrors, and a detachable audio panel," said AutoExtra.com. But Reed gave a thumbs-down. It's a sportier car, he said, and not ideal for teens.
# 2003 Ford Taurus LX. "The Taurus LX has low-maintenance costs, standard V6 engine and is loaded with options," said AutoExtra.com. Reed agreed. This car is "a workhorse. The size would be good, and [it has a] standard V6 engine, if people feel that's important."
# 2000 Chevy Blazer. "The Blazer is a good mix of safety, fair MPG (for a full-sized SUV) and insurance costs," said AutoExtra.com.
# The 1998 Toyota 4Runner is a "top selling SUV which translates into better resell and low-cost maintenance. With a larger wheel base it is less prone to roll-over," AutoExtra.com said. Reed agreed the 4Runner is less prone to rollover than other SUVs. "A great vehicle, but again it's an SUV," he said.
# 2003 Ford Ranger (half bed)

Since when is the Blazer considered a f/s vehicle?

Number 10 is the Ranger! That was my first vehicle when I was 16. I got a '95 Ranger (about $12,000 at the time). I loved that truck and when I went to college I had to drive a Toyota Celica for a while I couldn't wait to get back into a Ranger. It is a good first vehicle since you can get them for a very low price.

For a real bargoon, puck up a late model Cavalier. Re-sale is horrible but they are very reliable and cheap to maintain. A similar Civic could cost thousands more.

Re: 10 Smart Used Cars for Teens

reliable and cheap to maintain, but didn't those last gen cavs get abysmal safety ratings? like if you get tapped by a suzuki reno u will be impaled and decapitated? (notice use of hyperbole). since this is a list for kid cars, safety is probably the #1 priority, in which case a cavalier is out of contention

I would take my 20 year old grandpa's car over any of those cars on that list.

Hey Kong, is that the Factory Five car in your picture? I used to work near their office, and I live 10 mins away form where they are made, the back round looks like the Wareham Industrial Park where they are located.

Re: 10 Smart Used Cars for Teens

I say get em a minivan. No drag racing or jerking around when they are behind one of those. Reliable? Yes. Low cost? Yes! FWD for the snow season? Yes! Can they throw a lot of stuff (books, athletic gear) in it? Yes!
And it'll build character.
