This is where you replay the last twenty years of General Motors history and put on your skeptic's hat. 'They'll decontent the car, turn the suspension into a squishy mess, the seats will be made of muppet soft cloth and the steering will feel like it's connected to the road through a damp rope.' This is a supposition any healthy car consumer should have, especially regarding a Buick made from an Opel. On all counts however, you'd be wrong.

The Regal in the US is different than the Korean market version in tuning only, it shares 95% of it's parts with the Insignia. Basically the changes come down to different headlights and tail lights per federal requirements, new software in the radio and navigation system, different rear view mirror glass, and all-season tires. They actually improved over the Insignia's NVH requirements, adding sound deadening material in the cabin to make it align with Buick targets.

We drove the European spec Insignia against the Regal and believe it or not, the Regal is better.

Jim Frederico, chief engineer for Buick, just told assembled journalists at the ride-and-drive for the new Buick Regal that it'll receive a manny tranny as an available option — assumingly the same as the Opel Insignia's — sometime after launch.

While we were talking about the Escalade EXT launch with Susan Docherty (don't ask) during the Regal reveal at the Hollywood Palladium last week, Car & Driver's Steve Siler was pushing Maximum Bob about sportier versions of the newest Buick. Now, we heard mumblings about a new Buick Regal GS last month, but that was just dealer hearsay. Siler's report is straight from Lutz's mouth, and while he's not exactly the most reliable GM exec we've ever talked with, he does seem to have his finger on the General's performance pulse.

To summarize a bit, a 335-hp, all-wheel-drive manny-tranny version of the Regal might be coming, labeled with the legendary GS badge. There might even be a wagon version of the top of the line Regal – maybe even one with GM's eLSD torque vectoring. In fact, Lutz made it sound like GM might just import the 325-hp turbocharged 2.8-liter V6 Opel Insignia OPC Sports Tourer, crank up the boost a smidge and slap a Regal GS badge on it – which is more than totally fine with us. In fact, Siler suggests that what GM ought to do is make the tip top Regal wagon-only – sort of like the MazdaSpeed3 or WRX STI. Maybe call it the Buick Regal GSX? But like most such things involving GM these days, we'll believe it when we see it.

GM is set to launch a brand new version of its classic Buick Regal sedan.

Discontinued in 2004, the new Regal is a rebadged and slightly redesigned version of the Opel Insignia which is already popular in Europe. The new Regal which will begin selling next year in the US as a 2011 model will initially be built in Germany for its first 12 to 15 months of production. It will begin production in North America in 2011.

According to a report in Wards’ Auto, GM will begin production of a mild-hybrid version of the Regal later that year. This would then be the first vehicle GM makes using its second-generation belt/alternator/starter or BAS+ hybrid system. The system is reported to achieve 20% increase in fuel economy over standard gas versions of the vehicle.

The new BAS+ system has a 120 V lithium ion pack made by Hitachi and, takes up 24% less space, has 40% less mass, and has 33% more power than the current system, such as the one found in the Malibu Hybrid. That car was discontinued due to weak demand. The new system has slow speed EV only operation, electric assist during acceleration and engine off at stops.

The Regal will launch initially with a 2.4 L 4-cylinder direct injection engine. A 2.0 L turbo model, expected achieve 30 mpg on the highway will follow next year.

Jim Frederico, the Regal’s vehicle line director told Ward’s that the car has the appropriate dimensions to house not only the BAS+ system but also the upcoming 2-mode plugin drivetrain as well.

That drivetrain was initially intended for the Saturn VUE. After Saturn was terminated, GM next said it would appear in a similar-sized small Buick SUV. After those plans were also scrapped from negative public feedback GM hasn’t announced where the drivetrain would debut.

Placing it in this mid-sized sedan may be just the right solution. What do you think?

A new round of spy photos shows the production version of Buick’s “Business” MPV, complete with images of the nearly finished interior, plus some new exterior views. Monday’s snapshots follow 6 weeks after we published the first ever images of the prototype people-mover.

In April, Buick presented its “Business” Concept to a global audience at the Shanghai Motor Show. Five months later, prototypes began undergoing testing in the United States. Although first impressions may scream “minivan” – show-goers who saw the concept have referred to it as a tall-roof luxury limo.

Just over two weeks ago Buick debuted the first true Buick-theme 2010 LaCrosse commercial. The ad was fairly simple and featured the car driving in an urban intersection--piloted by someone under 50--with even more younger people staring the car down. Overall, the spot got mostly postiive feedback for its simplicity and for having the car actually being the center of attention. Yesterday the next two ads in the series came out and they look quite decent as well. Check them out below...

Just over a week ago an extremely clear view of the upcoming 2011 Buick Regal sedan was posted on Facebook by a keen-eyed fan. That car was spotted just out of Grand Rapids, Michigan leaving a General Motors event. Now, here we are again with the new Regal showing up on Facebook.

Just a few minutes ago the Buick PR team that runs the Buick Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/buick) page posted a very dark video of the new sedan. They claim it is of the Regal inside GM design studios. Not much is visible on the car other than the grille and some lines. The camera-operator moves rather swiftly in filming the car. Expect to see the -whole- car in December at the LA Auto Show.

*Content Note:* Hang around on GMI until 6:30-7:00 PM EDT tonight to participate in a live discussion with VP of Engineering Mark Reuss with Autoline After Hours! It will be on the front page in a thread!

---Quote---
With great fanfare, General Motors has introduced the 2010 Buick LaCrosse, a vehicle with which the automaker hopes to jump-start a sweeping brand transformation for the tired Tri-Shield. For Buick to be a success in GM's post-bailout, post-bankruptcy era, the brand must dump its well-deserved reputation as the preferred marque of last-time buyers. (Average age of previous-model LaCrosse buyer: Around 70.) For better or worse, as it scrambles to get more – and younger – drivers behind the wheel, Buick has elected to position itself as America's Lexus in a bid to give itself some premium cachet.

Frankly, that's a pretty tall order, but if first impressions mean anything, the Buick LaCrosse might be crowned GM's savior on appearances alone, because it's that attractive, especially compared to the fish-faced namesake it replaces. The 2009-and-prior LaCrosse looks like the unfortunate love child of a third-generation Ford Taurus and a Mitsuoka Orochi. Or, put plainly, it looks like some ugly Chinese car. By comparison, the 2010 LaCrosse is classy and stylish. Therein lies the delicious irony: the 2010 Buick LaCrosse's glitzy looks were, in fact, jointly developed with GM China's design team. Go figure, and be thankful. In the metal, this ride draws plenty appreciative stares.

BEHIND THE DECISION: GM Executive Explains Why Pontiac Died; Why Buick Will Succeed

A LETTER TO THE EDITOR OF _AUTOMOTIVE NEWS_ FROM GM VP SUSAN DOCHERTY*

SUSAN DOCHERTY, Vice President, U.S. Sales, General Motors Co., Detroit, October 26, 2009

To the Editor:

Regarding Robert E. Cherney's Oct. 19 letter, "Why kill Pontiac? Why keep Buick?": I'd like to assure your readers that phasing out Pontiac was one of the most difficult decisions of my career but also one of the most necessary.

Pontiac had been unprofitable for several years. A team, many of whom were passionate about the brand, tried in vain to save Pontiac and make it profitable -- but none of the scenarios proved viable.

We kept Buick in the General Motors family because it is highly profitable and will grow with new models for the next few years, giving Buick an offering in several sedan and crossover segments.

The Enclave is already a market success, with 50 percent of the buyers brand new to Buick. The 2010 LaCrosse is performing well, attracting younger buyers and those who are trading in imports like Lexus and Acura. And the 2011 Regal, a mid-sized sport sedan, arrives in U.S. dealerships in the spring. The Regal is already a hot seller in China and is based on the highly successful Opel Insignia, the 2009 European Car of the Year. A little further down the road, there will be a compact sedan and a small crossover joining the family.

We feel confident that we chose to save the right brand and that Buick has a bright future ahead of it.

*Auto Letters by Jim Mateja: No Solstice, Sky for GM*

Q. If GM wants to find a younger demographic for the Buick and Chevrolet lines, why not insert the Pontiac Solstice and/or Saturn Sky into them? They have the ability to produce these vehicles and have spent the time and money in establishing their names. And Buick doesn't have a two-seater, while Chevrolet has the much more expensive Corvette. Why not cherry-pick the models that are attractive to younger buyers? -- B.Y., Palatine, Ill.

A. One reason for not keeping Solstice or Sky is that popularity in those roadsters peaked and had headed downward, said General Motors spokesman Tom Wilkinson. "The trouble with roadsters, except for Corvette and (Mazda) Miata, is that interest quickly cools once everyone who wants one gets one. Demand had slowed so much for Solstice and Sky, it was difficult to make a business case to keep producing them," he said, regardless of whether Pontiac and Saturn were still around.

And it's interesting that even before Roger Penske dropped his plans to buy Saturn, Sky wasn't in the mix.

Finally, there are the legal reasons, Wilkinson said. "There are strict laws about taking a car out of one franchise and putting it in another. That's why, when we closed Oldsmobile, there were some cars we would like to have continued but couldn't."

*New GM Sales Chief Inquisitive - By Steve Finlay*

Despite the fact GM now builds some exceptional vehicles, too many consumers remember the bad old days. Public perception changes slower than the reality of the quality improvements GM has accomplished in a remarkably short time, after it finally regained its sanity.

So, Docherty has her work cut out for her as the head of U.S. sales operations for a bloodied but not beaten auto maker.

Despite the troubles it has seen, GM still has much brainpower and employs many sharp people. Sue Docherty is one of them.
