Ghosn Says New Titan Still Coming

Nissan will build a successor to the current Titan half-ton pickup, says Carlos Ghosn, CEO of Nissan.

"Titan will have a replacement, we are staying in the large pickup truck market," Ghosn told Edmunds.com. Ghosn said Nissan hasn't determined whether or not the Titan will be built in-house or with a partner.

Nissan had planned to partner with Chrysler to build the next-gen Titan off the current Dodge Ram 1500 platform but those plans were mutually called off in August.

In May, at the New York Auto Show, Larry Dominique, Nissan North America’s vice president of product and advanced planning, told PickupTrucks.com that Nissan's goal is to stay in the full-size truck market. Nissan may also add a heavy-duty pickup as part of its upcoming light commercial vehicle lineup.

Review: Toyota Venza falls short - From MSNBC

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/33605151/ns/business-autos/

**Toyota Venza leaves a lot to be desired.
*Toyota may be making many of the mistakes that GM made.
*The Venza may well be Toyota’s problems embodied in steel, rubber and glass. And plastic. Loads of cheap, shiny, sloppily installed plastic.
*Verdict: Toyota is off its game and needs to refocus on giving customers more than they expect rather than thinking they won’t notice that they are being shortchanged. *

Here's a little bit from the page:

It frequently has been observed that it is easier to stalk the leader than it is to preserve that position once it is achieved.

A case in point: The struggles Toyota has endured since overtaking General Motors as the leader in worldwide car sales last year.

The Venza, a new, hard-to-define crossover-wagon thing, may well be Toyota’s predicament embodied in steel, rubber and glass. And plastic. Loads of cheap, shiny, sloppily installed plastic.

Having apparently concluded that six Toyota-brand SUVs and a minivan were not enough to target every potential customer for hauling families, Toyota introduced the Venza as a 2009 model.

It's unknown whether this was the result of a genuine belief that the company should offer a product in every imaginable category, or because hubris led Toyota to believe that the Venza would find buyers who eluded the very similar (and discontinued due to lack of interest) Chrysler Pacifica and Ford Taurus X crossovers.

Toyota reached the top of the industry by use of its “kaizen” system of continuous improvement, key attributes of which have been widely adopted industry-wide. But somewhere along the line “continuous improvement” became “continuous cost reduction” and it shows in all the company’s recent products.

The interiors in particular are awash in cheap-looking, shiny plastic. Likening the Venza’s apparently ready-to-hose-clean, plastic door panels to something from the toy aisle would insult Buzz Lightyear and Woody.

Worse yet, the plastic bits in the test model weren’t installed correctly, so the cut lines between pieces were misaligned in places and the dashboard air vents had shockingly large, irregular gaps around them. These are the things that killed GM’s image. Now Toyota is making the same inexcusable mistakes.

President Toyoda referred several times at the Tokyo show to his company’s rear-drive sports cars, citing the MR2, the Celica and the AE86 Corolla coupe. “The fact that none of these vehicles is still being produced makes me, a serious car fan, really sad,” he said. The show-car’s FT86 name is a reference to the AE86, by the way, but Tada says the production car might be called Celica.

VIDEO: Ford press conference yields surprise $650 car announcement

*VIDEO: Ford press conference yields surprise $650 car announcement*

Between the hysteria of this week's SEMA Show and Chrysler's never-ending (and partially baffling) revelations yesterday, a shocking announcement by Ford Motor Company has been nearly drowned out. But rest assured, your Autoblog team never rests (even after huffing down 9,000 calories apiece at Vegas' Wynn Buffet!) and have tracked down this astounding piece of news. Ford has taken a long, hard look at the state of the American automotive scene and has decided to do the (almost) unthinkable – sell us a car for $650.

Now, there are no doubt naysayers amongst you that will point to a $650 Ford and cry, "Malarkey!" And with good reason. After all, under cutting the Tata Nano by a full $1,350 is no easy feat. However, times are tough. And with a nearly 10% national unemployment rate, a $650 car makes sound, economic sense. But don't take our word for it. Make the jump to watch Ford VP Daniel Grossman introduce Ford's new entry level car.

Honda Announces Pricing for All-new 2010 Accord Crosstour
Premium and versatile crossover utility vehicle based on the popular Accord starts at $29,670

The all-new 2010 Honda Accord Crosstour is set to debut on November 20 with a manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) starting at $29,670, plus a destination and handling charge1 of $710, American Honda Motor Co., Inc., announced today.

The Accord Crosstour combines the sophisticated refinement of a premium sedan with versatile characteristics of an SUV to create an entirely distinct concept within the Crossover Utility Vehicle (CUV) segment. Leveraging the many benefits of a car-based platform, the Accord Crosstour starts with the top-level refinement of the Accord V-6 Sedan and further expands utility with a sleek-yet-functional profile for increased cargo space.

The Accord Crosstour is designed to fulfill multiple roles for both style and function. A bold and sleek exterior conveys a prestigious presence from the outside, while premium interior styling extends from the passenger compartment into the cargo area. Increased functionality is provided by an under-floor storage area in the rear of the vehicle and reversible cargo floor panels ideal for dirty objects. Cargo area access is further enhanced by a tailgate with a large opening and a low lift-over height.

All Accord Crosstour models come standard with a 3.5-liter i-VTEC V-6 engine with Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) designed for power and efficiency. The engine produces 271 horsepower at 6,200 RPM and 254 lb-ft. of torque at 5,000 RPM while achieving an EPA-rated city/highway fuel economy of 18/27 mpg 2 on 2WD models. The VCM cylinder deactivation system is programmed to run on 3, 4 or 6 cylinders, based on current power requirements. A technologically advanced 5-speed automatic transmission is standard equipment. For CUV capability, the Accord Crosstour provides amble ground clearance and Real Time™ 4WD drive is available.

The Accord Crosstour is available in two model choices, the EX and EX-L. Highlights of standard features on the Accord Crosstour EX include: dual-zone automatic air conditioning with second row ventilation, 360-Watt AM/FM 6-disc audio system with seven speakers, easy fold-down 60-40 split rear seat back, 17-inch aluminum wheels with 225/65 R17 all-season tires, hidden removable utility box, cruise control, moonroof, auto up/down driver and front passenger side windows, rear privacy glass, steering wheel-integrated audio controls, compass and outside temperature indicator, projector beam headlights with auto-off, fog lights, chrome door handles, body-colored power side mirrors with defrost, and more.

The Accord Crosstour EX-L adds or upgrades: leather-trimmed seating surfaces with heated front seats, leather steering wheel, leather gear shift knob, auto day/night dimming rearview mirror, 18-inch aluminum wheels with 225/60 R18 all-season tires, auto on/off headlights, memory driver-side seats, memory side mirrors with reverse tilting capability, cargo privacy cover, HomeLink™ transmitter, Kevlar® cone speakers, aluminum dome-type front tweeter speakers and a USB audio interface.

Available features exclusive to the Accord Crosstour EX-L include the Honda Satellite-linked Navigation System 3 and Real Time 4WD, available together or separately. The navigation system includes a backup camera with guidance lines integrated into the display.

Safety technology includes the Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure, a Honda-exclusive body design that enhances occupant protection and crash compatibility in frontal collisions. Additional safety equipment includes: Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®), commonly referred to as Electronic Stability Control; anti-lock brakes with electronic brake distribution and brake assist; side curtain airbags with a rollover sensor; driver's and front passenger's side airbags with passenger-side Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS); dual-stage, multiple threshold front airbags; and active front seat head restraints.

Hyundai Developing OnStar Competitor

---Quote (Originally by Autoblog)---
As part of its product and marketing development process, Hyundai has reached out to owners and enthusiasts to create a network of consumers with which to discuss everything from future models and technologies to advertising tactics, polls, and so on.

Autoblog has learned of a communiqué issued to members late last week where Dean Macko, Hyundai's Manager of Brand Strategy, appealed to focus group members to help come up with a name for a new "Advanced Technological System" – a telematics package likened repeatedly to General Motors' OnStar and Ford's Microsoft Sync.

According to Macko, the system Hyundai is pursuing focuses on "four buckets of service": Safety and Security (including theft immobilization and automatic emergency service notification in the event of a crash), Infotainment (wireless connectivity features for telephone, music, etc.), Navigation (like OnStar's turn-by-turn direction service), and Vehicle Diagnostics, a tool for both owners and dealers that could help track the need for maintenance and potentially even notify one's dealer to order parts for a forthcoming repair.

Macko admits Hyundai has come up with a number of possible names on its own, including In Touch, Ring, Fuse and Emerge, but the company is reaching out to its network for suggestions. Calling them "naming experts," Macko indicates that this focus group has already helped come up with titles for future paint colors.

To be clear, in Macko's video message, he only says that Hyundai is "thinking about" introducing such a system – he does not commit to a product, timetable, or price. However, given the tone of his message and the nature of the group that Macko is appealing to, we have to believe that this new technology is just around the corner... perhaps tied to the launch of the Equus luxury sedan?

Hyundai apparently needs these naming suggestions by this Wednesday, November 4, and while most of you probably aren't part of Hyundai's focus group, we know that top company officials trawl these hallowed precincts on a daily basis. Thus, if you have a suggestion of your own, why not drop it in 'Comments' – who knows, they just might pick yours.

Deep concerns in Japan that the global credit crisis structurally shifted the market in North America towards smaller and less-expensive vehicles led Honda to make major changes in its product plans late last year, likely delaying the arrival of the new Civic past its usual four- or five-year product cycle.

Honda CEO Takanobu Ito didn't provide a time frame for when the next-generation Civic would arrive, but told trade journal Automotive News that the team is having trouble meeting the revised deadlines.

A senior Toyota official has confirmed that there may indeed be a convertible version of the FT-86 coupe if the demand proves to be strong. This is the first mention we have heard from Toyota regarding a potential convertible version. Unless it’s already under testing currently, a convertible version of the FT-86 would likely follow a year after the coupe version first becomes available. -- http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=133

Hot Quest for Green Machine Makes Nissan Tap Into Voltage

*Hot Quest for Green Machine Makes Nissan, GM Tap Into Voltage*

Image: http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/data?pid=avimage&iid=i5ywtEwtJwvw

Oct. 29 (Bloomberg) -- Cars are going electric and Nissan Motor Co. is leading the way. At least that’s what the Japanese company was saying last spring at a media presentation in Bear Mountain, New York.

Nissan’s plan for a mass-market electric vehicle was surprisingly ambitious, and to prove it wasn’t all talk I was allowed to drive a test car with the electric power train around the parking lot.

The five-door hatchback now has a name, the Leaf, and an on-sale date of December 2010 in select parts of the U.S. The price will likely be around $30,000, with buyers also getting a $7,500 Federal tax rebate for electric vehicles.

Between that discount and savings on electricity versus gasoline, the company claims cost of ownership could be a third less than a comparable, well-equipped car.

“People who thought we were 5 to 10 years from seeing electric vehicles are suddenly realizing we’re only 12 to 14 months away,” said Mark Perry, Nissan’s director of product planning. “Better get ready.”

Electric vehicles, or EVs, are getting a big push by manufacturers, and the alternative fuel is increasingly looking like the buzz of the future.

Three years ago, only Tesla Motors, the Silicon Valley startup, and General Motors had announced plans to sell EVs. Tesla was first out of the gate with its $109,000 Roadster. The Chevrolet Volt is supposed to begin arriving in November of next year.

Ford Focus

In the next three years, consumers can also reasonably expect to shop for Ford Focus EVs and entrants from California- based startups Fisker Automotive, Aptera Motors and Coda Automotive. Hundreds of Mini E cars are now being leased in California and New York.

So what do aspiring buyers need to know? Technologies differ. EVs run only as long as the batteries are charged (like the Tesla and the Leaf), but use no gas. Other types, known as extended-range EVs or plug-in hybrids, can engage small gasoline engines to recharge the batteries when the charge runs down (the Volt and Fisker Karma). You can always fill up and keep driving, but oil is still in the equation.

Range is an issue, especially with the lack of a national quick-charge infrastructure. EV automakers endlessly quote the statistic that most Americans drive fewer than 40 miles a day, allowing recharging at night. If you do overextend a pure EV’s battery, a flatbed truck is in your future.

GM Volt

“The Volt is an extended-range vehicle, so infrastructure won’t define our success,” said Rob Peterson, GM spokesman. “On a full charge and a tank of gas, the Volt can travel 300 miles.”

The Volt, which can go 40 miles solely on battery power, should cost somewhere between $35,000 and $40,000, though the company has yet to release the price. It will have a “controlled” launch, with “thousands built next year and tens of thousands the years after,” said Peterson. Expect sales first in locales like California and Seattle, considered more EV-ready due to urban concentration, weather and consumer interest.

Nissan went with a pure EV approach because it wants a leadership position, said Perry. “We believe the best way to reduce CO2 is to produce nothing at all -- you can’t get any better than zero.”

(It’s worth noting that while pure EVs create no tailpipe pollution, the same may not be true for the power stations that supply the electricity to charge the vehicles.)

If some carmakers are going all in, others are only dipping a toe. BMW-owned Mini has 450 electric Coopers in southern California and the New York metro area. Pre-vetted consumers were given an $850-a-month, short-time lease which includes insurance, maintenance and a home quick-charge station.

"If you want to run the Rubicon, you can expect damage. It's a given and we all know it. Heck, we saw a number of broken rigs on this trip, and we've damaged our modified project rigs and personal vehicles on the Rubicon. Interestingly, the stock 4Runners fared very well. At no time did they suffer driveline damage or systems failure. Body damage was very light. We inspected the rigs and found what we expected: toasted mud flaps, wrinkled skidplates, and dented mufflers. This was all predictable, especially considering these rigs were stock height. Yep, we were impressed by the new 4Runner Trail."

Damn I wish GM would compete in this segment. It sure would be nice to have a Chevy Blazer based off of the H3 Alpha.

I'm sure the price will be 40k+ for a new 4Runner and no one in their right mind would do this to a new vehicle, but it is pretty to have a capable BOF SUV.

On Sunday, we brought you word of a Nissan recall affecting 2009-2010 Altima sedans, and today, we bring you word of an even larger safety issue impacting its CUV lineup. The Japanese automaker is recalling 163,659 2008 and 2009 model year Rogue crossovers due to a potentially serious safety issue involving the crossover's steering gear housing cover.
