The "mess of buttons" is European. What GM has managed to do here is eliminate any "european" feel to Saab and turned it into a G6. It's pathetic.

Though, I will say that the 9-3 does have a better dash alignment than the 9-5.

VW and Audi has a corprate radio that they use in almost all of their models, so it can be made to look good. Its been done before.
