The point is simple: horsepower isn't everything. While it'd be nice to have a 300+-hp CTS in 2008, I hope that overall the package is refined. If so, the CTS will be fine, potentially lesser horsepower notwithstanding.

I understand what you are saying - but with the situation that GM is in - they need to pull out all the stops to change the perception that our engineering is second class. The interior needs to be class leading and the powertrain needs to be best in class - that is the only way that the car will be able to shake the stigma of being "GM Crap" in the auto mags. If you come in with less horsepower then the mags will rip it for coming to the table with less than the class leaders.
This is my problem with many of GM's efforts in the past 10 years. Their products may have been good and reliable but they were always at last years standards - always behind the pack. Even the Aura suffers from this to a certain degree as does the new GMT-900 trucks - coming out in a couple months still with a 4-speed auto? Come on... they have been working on the truck for five years and can't time the six speed with the introduction.
Gm is working hard to change the perception of lackluster engineering - but having a class leading powertrain would go a long way to convincing the masses.
