I haven't herd much about direct injection on the V8's, though plenty of times, even from GM I have heard of 3 valves per cylinder on the V8 engines, along with a separate camshaft just to control the exhaust valve, and the adding variable valve timing. That alone would add up to one mean V8. Gm did have charts out before showing a 10-15% power increase just going to the 3 valve heads, and then adding 2-stage intake valve lift for better low end torque and higher horsepower.
