Bathurst 24 Hour Too Good To Let Go: Brock

Peter Brock has decided to put his mind to resuscitating the Bathurst 24 Hour, a race the touring car legend believes "should be restored to the calendar". "We can't let it go - it's such a fantastic event," Brock declared.
The Bathurst 24 Hour was the brainchild of Queensland businessman Ross Palmer. It ran for two years, 2002-03, and was praised by local and international teams and drivers. But Palmer acknowledged he lost money on the event and despite the efforts of others, including Bathurst Council, to keep the idea alive, the race did not proceed in 2004.
Brock, who won in 2003 in a Monaro, remains a true believer and says local motor sport needs a counter-attraction to V8 supercars. He believes the race could grow into one of the world's great events.
Brock says he is sure Bathurst Council wants to see the Mount Panorama circuit used more than one weekend a year, particularly after the national and state governments each tipped in $10 million for a recent major refurbishment. "I'm sure there are enough influential people who love motor sport who we can encourage to get behind bringing back the Bathurst 24 Hour," said Brock.
David Richards, owner of the huge Prodrive motor sport organisation who visited Mount Panorama for the first time at the weekend, is also very supportive. "The new pit area is as good as many formula one circuits," enthused Richards, the former boss of the BAR F1 team and owner of the FPR Ford V8 supercar team.
