Trouble is that after a week or two the member will go looking for an alternative and never come back. Better to give them 10 days ban followed by 3 months "Good Behavior" trial where they commit to some action. In the case of someone like t-rex you make him stay out of all political threads for the 3 months. Someone who is abusive to others has to say make no personal comments of any sort for 3 months. If they break their commitment then it's another 10 days ban, third breach makes it permanent.
Something like that I think would be both disciplinary and reforming without it being in effect a permanent ban simply by being so long as to drive the user to a new site. Just my personal opinion....

I agree. Give members a choice, get rid of ban (or infractions) with limits, breaching of the terms results in a perminant ban if it is a ban you had, and a 1 month ban if you had infractions wiped off.
