By begging at the public trough they now have to cowtow to the Democratic Overlords and the Republican Slimebuckets. 'You want public largess then you will have to do what the public ( meaning Congress ) wants you to do.'

This has to be humiliating for three of the pillars of the American Century. "Please give us money, we'll do whatever you want."
Don't misunderstand me: I know the Detroit 3 can't have a blank check and I don't want them to get one. The problem is that I believe the Democrats will overreach in order to acheive social engineering goals that will result in eventually fatally crippling them instead of coming up with a business plan to ensure that the companies return to profibility and (ultimately) independence.

If the Republicans had total control of the government, they would probably overreach while trying to destroy the UAW, for example. I admit that I haven't thought out the scenario for GOP destruction of the domestic auto industry as much as I have thought about the Democratic destrruction of the domestic auto industry. I am sure the GOP would be capable of wrecking it just as thoroughly as the Dems. They might be less likely to encourage R&D into alternative fuel research, for example.

But, since they're not in charge, it will be the Democrats' attempts at social engineering that, provided they don't destroy the Detroit 3 outright, will consign them to a sort of mediocrity and on- going governmental dependence. The problem facing the Detroit 3 is so complex that dumb pronouncements by congress critters that "Plug- in electric hybrids are the future" isn't going to fix it. The UAW is a huge part of the problem and needs to be brought to heel if these companies are going to return to profibility. Show of hands: Who thinks the Dems are going to force any pain on the UAW?

If we had a divided government maybe the worst impulses of both parties could be contained, but we don't. So, we're left with a problem that will not go away until the Detroit 3 really are dead and buried.
