I agree that the 2.0 DI would be a welcome addition...however...the 2.0 DI is a significantly more expensive engine than the 3.5 V6, with two cams instead of one, direct injection, and a turbocharger. I'm not saying they shouldn't do it (it would give the car unique appeal) but the 3.5 V6 is underappreciated for what it is. 220 hp/220 torque is a respectable number, not much off from the 2.0 DI.
What they SHOULD do is offer manual transmissions across all engines, and make the 6-speed automatic replace all of the 4-speeds. Heck, I'm even a fan of the 3.9 V6 -- keep that around as an option too. The HV V6 models are great engines.
I find it hard to believe that offering more engine and transmission choices would significantly impact the price of the vehicle, and it would offer something the competition doesn't, as well as keep in line with Pontiac's "customizable" image (which they are currently pushing with silly things like the chrome exhaust tips and such).
So... 2.4 I4, 3.5 V6, 3.9 V6, and 3.6 HF, all with manual transmissions. Sounds like a winner to me.
