Re: GM + Chrysler: What it may look like post-merger
I believe the initial merger talks in early 07 exposed the worst problems in a possible GM-Chrysler merger. Since then both GM and Cerberus(more so Cerberus) have been slowly aligning synergies behind the scenes as much as possible for an eventual merger should hard times arrive(This is why there is no GM minivan) Hard times are now here!!
Cerberus has been cutting overlap and aligning their dealerships. Being privitized means they can cut & slash programs like GM never could. Should this merger actually take place Cerberus will do all of the dirty work BEFORE swapping Chrysler for the remaining GMAC ownership. In exchange GM will be guaranteed financing through GMAC at very favorable rates indefinitely and will keep a small stake in GMAC to assure this. Both GM-C and Cerberus get their share of the gov't bailout funds. Essentially the bankers(Cerberus, with private backers) take care of the banking(their strength) and GM takes care of the autos(their strength, supposedly) The two forge forward very much in concert helping each other along as much as reasonably possible within the existing economic climate. GM regains it's true marketshare leadership and gets further economies of scale while living up to its heritage as GENERAL Motors.
Chrysler becomes a slimmed down but full line BPG type dealership network existing solely of the Chrysler 300 & T&C, Dodge Ram variants, Charger & Challenger, Caravan, Journey and the Nissan produced smaller car and Jeep keeps only the Patriot, Wrangler and Grand Cherokee. GM-C keeps the already arranged Nissan deal for small cars and to produce the next Titan to help offset costs of the second truckline near term and long term they platform share with GM's next GM900 truck platform. Extraordinary economic hard times require RADICAL thinking. This could work!
