I have heard nothing but good things about Subaru in the last few years. I am surprised they are not more popular than they are. I would definitely consider one for my next car
I recently test drove an '09 Forester and was impressed by it far more than the CR-V, Rav-4 or Vue. Great car! You're right, GM needs a decent small SUV like the Forester! Right now they don't have anything worth considering.
