See, thats whats really interesting here. Using today's date as a starting point, the 4.2/5.6L 'programs and necc precursors' are in a very real sense, more than 10 years old.

For comparison, MB's game changin' King Kong '2.2'L took four years - from start to finish.

Basically they were just about 'ready' - and then a bunch of stuff happened - including some really important emissions standard changes.

Obviously ( for good reason ), the 6.7 - (and 5.9) get and got, 'priority'.

Anyway, here we are now - technically speaking with three possibilities for configuration. I6 ( long shot - not likely but ....),V6 and V8 - which is the best guess.

Future Two Mode - Diesel Hybrid - and more advanced 'diesel basics' are probably the main drivers on the displacement change and (apparent) choice.

That ( 2M) also 'probably' makes the vee eight much more likely although there are other considerations that favor it as well.

Personally, I rather have it as an I6 - unless and until we get better information that goes the otherway.
