You have much higher standards than me... I loved my Optra5... if I ever meet your wife she's going to blow me out of the water!
I rented a RHD Astra last week in Scotland... it was diesel, but I think that it was 1.6L (if that exists). As I'm used to pretend cars with no power, I was quite pleased. It seemed quite noisey to me... mostly road noise... but overall I was very impressed with it.
Keep the Calais and have the wife try a Suzuki Swift diesel.
