So lemme get this straight. You live in a place that has dozens of mouth-watering Euro stuff denied to this Hillbilly land of yutzes, and didn't bother checking any out (Astra aside)?

Peugeot 307 is supposed to be the best-handler in its class, and there's of course the Golf, not to mention the strange Citroen C4. I'd say try the Volvo V50, but it's a rather dour drive. The new Mazda3's just around the corner so maybe you can luck up on a run-out special!

Screw that. Just buy an Impreza or Liberty. BTW why the Hell aren't they called "Legacy" in Oz like everywhere else?
Golf is considerably pricier and starts with a 1.6, I don't fit in a Citroen C4, as you said Volvo sucks balls and oddly enough has less space than a Focus , Impreza has child seat anchor points on its boot lip (thereby reducing you luggage space by 2/3), Liberty is a possibility but also a tad too pricey. I don't mind the Mazda 3. I drove my sister in laws SP 23 when she bought it last year. It handles great and although noisy, it is a glorious little roar. It's on the list. As i was saying to FISH, these examples where driven for the sake of exclusion. I wasn't really expecting too much, but I was hoping that perhaps the Viva wouldn't be as bad as it was
