While I agree with you overall, musical nameplates just confuse things, it's not like it's an update of the same car - it is essentially a totally different car. It will be an Epsilon II now rather than a W body and the only thing that the two will have shared is the 3.6 liter V6.
Perhaps JD Powers will be smart enough to say "Invicta replaces the LaCrosse and rides on an updated version of the architecture that underpins the class leading Malibu."
LaCrosse should never have been used to begin with. The car doesn't bear the slightest resemblance to the showcar of the same name. They should have just stuck with Regal. At least the Invicta would actually look somewhat like the showcar it was named after. And Invicta is an old Buick name, afterall. Though I'm sure there's very few in the general public who are aware of that.
