These aren't the days of relatively tech-lagging 2.2L Ecotecs anymore, or the OHV fat fours before them.

Need we mention the 2.0L Turbo ECOTEC. 260 HP and a flat torque curve, and it could easily get 30 MPG with a 6-speed.
