Where I grew up, there were no ethnic enclaves. No one referred to themselves as hyphenated Americans. I moved to Milwaukee. There were and are ethnic enclaves to this day. However, when it was time for me to buy my house, I quite purposefully did not move into "my" enclave. I moved into a suburb because I was quite uncomfortable seeing people fly "my" foreign flag in front of their houses (on American soil).
