Volt is more than this, since there's no connection between the gas engine and the wheels. The engine only recharges the battery. So, this requires a more advanced battery that the 'classical' hybrid. The mileage also will be greater.

It isn't, it works like the Volt, where the main driver is the electric engine, and the diesel engine is the backup. And 30 miles of EV-only range isn't all that bad (This is just a start after all) , hopefully the car doesn't weigh too much.
