You're preaching to the choir. I agree with you. However, the diesel is probably a better tower, and gets better FE than any of the other powertrain choices. It's a pretty neat driving experience, though not one I'd be willing to pay $5 a gallon every day to experience.
Arguably the diesel would be a better choice in off road situations, though I doubt I'll have an opportunity to verify that firsthand.
