Eh... awesome is not what comes to mind when I drive them. I've driven and been driven in the last three generations for extended periods of time, and baby-sat an S550 for a couple of weeks (long story). They're nice, for sure, but they aren't the automotive gods that people make them out to be. Some of my best friends swoon over these things like the Second Coming.
I've toyed with the idea of buying a new one for when I feel like driving in a "sane" and "responsible" manner, but ultimately, I can't pull the trigger. $100,000 is very hard to justify for a car that makes me feel like a 90 year old man, which a Cadillac DTS, Lincoln MKS, or Chrysler 300C would do just as well.
Repair bills are also astronomical. One incident involving what was basically a tune-up and patch job for various little annoying things that went wrong with a friend's 2002 S430 ended up being a lower-middle 5 figure bill.
