Re: GM's Hummer brand under review for sale or major revamp
This is GM's problem- they have no clue how to seperate the identities of thier brands. They are too busy trying to make every brand appeal to every customer. Maybe they need to spin off a couple badges. Stop trying to rebadge everything and give your brands some individuality.
Does anyone see Ferarri or Porsche or Lamborghini closing plants? No, and why? Because they know they have a niche vehicle and treat it as such. Make something that your target audience wants to buy and it doesn't matter what kind of gas mileage it gets OR how much it costs.
GM needs to start letting it's BRANDS acts more like seperate COMPANIES.
HUMMER quite simply makes one of the most capable off-road ranges in the business. And there are still people that buy these vehicles for thier intended purpose, not just as a status symbol.
Furthermore, HUMMERS are selling like mad out in the middle east (I would know, I am in Abu Dhabi UAE right now) where gas prices are still between $1-2 or less per gallon.
If HUMMER downsized thier operations (ie close dealerships and go low-volume) they would sell enough vehicles to be a niche COMPANY, just like porsche, ferarri, et al.
