Re: Pontiac name the G8 contest update (and a surprise)

El Camino was originally a Cadillac name. Used on a 2 seater car in the 1954 Motorama. It was fiberglass bodied with a brushed stainless-steel top. The very same script/font was applied to the Chevy car/pickup in 1959. In 1937 Chevrolet offered their first fusion of car and truck. The Master Coupe offered an optional "coupe delivery", basically the trunk lid was removed and a short pick up styled box extended out of the trunk area out to just short of the rear bumper. Pontiac itself was originally a model name of the GM Oakland car company(1926). The Pontiac model out sold other Oaklands so quickly that GM changed the division name to Pontiac (1932). Pontiac also offered a 3/4 ton closed body truck based on its passenger car chassis. With a payload of 3470 lbs. this truck evolved into a GMC light duty truck, Model T-11 and T-15A, in the late 20's or early 30's.

Shakespeare said "What's in a name? Would not a rose by any other name smell as sweet?" (Romeo & Juliet). Shakespeare obviously wasn't involved directly in marketing, but he did manage to turn a good phrase or two.

I think that bringing this new 'Ute' as a Chevy El Camino would make the most sense, but there are some historical precedents for Pontiac. The problem is that most people aren't aware of them. I think naming it the Pontiac Oakland might be kinda cool from a 'what goes around comes around' sort of way. But I would also think Pontiac Pannier Would be good (panniers are those racks and bag rigs used on pack horses/mules/donkeys).

Name and branding is important, but supplying demand triumphs. I believe that there is a market for this type of vehicle. I hear it every time I show my 70 454 El Camino. The big wants are 1) rear wheel drive 2) good power 3) good looks. I think this car/truck has those.

Bring it on!
