There is no universal law of physics that mandates this. It has been directly confirmed to me by a key Corvette engineer that their lap was done from a standing start. Given the seniority of the engineer I have no reason to doubt the claim. I will check with Magnussen personally to confirm if he also ran the full track. I have left word for the engineer to check that fact but don't expect a response any time soon.

You may choose to believe whatever you would like. People once killed to prove that the world was flat. But my source is impeccable and has no reason to lie. The ZR1's run will likely be filmed we will see then if what is apparently a law of physics can in fact be broken.

FULL LAP, FULL LAP, FULL LAP!!!!

I finally confirmed it directly and how it happened. It was described as exceedingly difficult. From a standing start the car came back to stop the clock as it crossed the line at max speed. Jan then kept going as he took a long cool down lap and CAME BACK TO THE PITS AFTER EVERY SINGLE TIMED LAP (magazines got that detail wrong). Then, from a dead stop, reentered the track to the start zone where he did it again. In effect, each timed lap involved two actual laps. One in anger and timed and one cool down not timed.

The procedure was described as the reason why despite ponying up to close the track for an hour Jan was only able to complete four sub 8 minute timed laps. They blew half the time on four more cool down to pit-dead-stop laps.

I dare ANYONE at Sebring to ask Jan how he did this at Sebring for the ALMS opener. Film it then post the video on this site. I guarantee you will get this answer because of where I got it. That's how sure I am about the veracity of what I just said. If you get to the Sebring track early enough you can talk to the drivers. Have a friend take pictures and film you asking Jan simply how he did the laps. Were they standing start full laps with a cool down lap after every timed lap? Did he reenter the track to a start line from the pits for every timed lap he ran? Post his video response on this thread with my above assertion when you do it. See if they match.

Does anyone here really think I would ruin my reputation on this site by making a claim like this that wasn't in fact true? Well let's see. Come on people, the ALMS is run through several states. At least one of you can do this.
Bwright is a well respected member of Corvette forums, so I have no reason to doubt him if he says he confirmed it.
