The atkinson cycle is achieved in modern gas engines by using late intake valve closing. Basically the intake valve is open for a portion of the compression stroke and then closes, lowering the amount of air in the combustion chamber. This is another reason why the 6.0 was chosen over the 5.3 because the power would be too low with the 5.3.
