GM Canada Expected to Announce 1,000 New Jobs Tomorrow

GM of Canada is expected to announce 1,000 new engineering jobs on Friday morning in Oshawa.

Details remain scarce until tomorrow, but Oshawa has received a hurry-up to help develop technology related to autonomous and connected cars.

While the announcement is not related to the fate of Oshawa Assembly per-se, it’s likely to give us a hint at GM’s future use of Canadian talent. The new jobs are likely to spread across a number of new research facilities– foremost, ‎GM’s new office in Waterloo’s Communitech innovation centre, along with GM’s planned mobility campus on Toronto’s eastern waterfront.

The fact that both Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Ontario’s Premier Kathleen Wynne are expected in attendance indicates a significant announcement–one unlikely tied to manufacturing jobs– it wouldn’t be surprising if GM also announced a significant investment in the Canadian tech sector as part of their bailout agreement with the Canadian and Ontario governments.
